The primary objective of the Trust is to restore the Goods Shed and bring it back into use for the benefit of the community. The Llanelli Railway Goods Shed Trust, which was incorporated in 2011 as a not for profit charitable company, is also empowered to preserve other heritage buildings in the Llanelli area and is currently assessing the options for preserving the Llanelli West Signal box.

Currently the Goods Shed is in a derelict state but structurally sound. The Trust is in negotiation with the owner, Network Rail, to transfer ownership of the building subject to grant funding being obtained. The Llanelli Goods Shed is one of the few survivors of this type of building in the country and in its heyday played a crucial role in the development of Llanelli as a major industrial centre. The Shed ceased operation on 7th October 1966 and since that time has been largely unused.

The Trust has undertaken a substantial amount of development work and extensive consultations in order to progress the project thanks to generous grant funding from The Heritage Lottery Fund, The Big Lottery, The Architectural Heritage Fund, The Railway Heritage Trust and Carmarthenshire County Council.  This has enabled the Trust to obtain Planning Permission and Listed Building Consent.

The Trust’s vision is to create a hub for cultural, heritage, community and enterprise activities and is supported in its objective by Carmarthenshire County Council who see the project as an important catalyst for the regeneration of this deprived part of the Town.
