We have been working hard to get the funding and permissions in place to begin the restoration of Llanelli’s historic Railway Goods Shed.

Representatives of Trust recently held very positive discussions with Paul Childs of the Railway Heritage Trust about getting funding for repairs to the shed, in order to facilitate the first stage of the project which includes refurbishing the offices.

They also met with Michael Plageman from Davies Sutton Architects to discuss completing the project in phases. Michael saw the shed repairs as a great opportunity to get the Cyfle apprenticeship scheme involved in the project, suggesting that once the initial repairs had been completed the shed could be used as a live working site over a period of time.

Negotiations with Network Rail over handing the Goods Shed over to the Trust are ongoing, and they invited us to a meeting of the Community Rail Panel to update their representatives on progress.

Earlier this month, the Trustees and the Friends of Llanelli Train Station met with Martin Yallop from the Association of Community Rail Partnerships, and together spent about an hour looking over the Offices, Shed and Basement. Martin was impressed with what had been achieved so far and the scale and history of the Goods Shed building, and he was able to give us some insight into their architectural and design features. He also offered some ideas and ongoing help and support.
